Ship Wheels have been around since the early 18th century. When they first came into existence they were used on the deck of the ship near the rudder and the captain was always exposed to the elements. This, of course, was very difficult. Eventually with the introduction of the steam ship, the ship wheel was moved inside to the bridge, where it was much easier and safer on the captain to navigate.
