Sailor's Valentines

19th century artists typically used octagonal mahogany frames to incorporate
a sentimental message of love for the sailor's sweetheart at home. Flower
patterns, hearts and wind roses were popular designs used in the
compositions. For this reason they became known over time as sailor's
valentines. No book about nautical antiques, no marine auction at
Christie's, or Sotheby's is complete without reference to original shell
frames. Often you will see sailor's valentines selling between eight and
eighteen thousand dollars.
Our sailor's valentines are made using small non-endangered shells collected
on Spice Island beaches. The solid mahogany frame is authentic in style and
detail and they can be hung by using the decorative brass hanger. The cost
of our sailor's valentines are only a fraction of that of the originals and
the overall quality and detail is better on average than the originals. They
look great in any classic interior, not just a nautical themed interior and
come packaged in a octagon printed gift box. They are truly rare, timeless
and striking gifts.
